A few weeks ago, when I was talking about the Witches of Eastwick, my friend Airlea (who I get to see this weekend! YAY!) commented that that movie was the first rated R movie that she sneaked into. It reminded me of the first rated R movie that I sneaked into, which was "Down and Out in Beverly Hills"- Why? I have no idea- maybe it looked kind of funny or maybe it was the only R rated movie playing at the theater that day. I certainly don't have a thing for Nick Nolte. I also seem to remember a lot of the jokes in the movie going over my head- I am sure my friend Elyssia (ee-lee-sia) Pepper and I were too busy laughing and giggling to take much notice. (Elyssia was one of my bad-girl friends, she didn't have a lot of parental supervision. I believe she had her first baby at 15. She was expecting #2 before graduation. We kind of lost touch after 8th grade.)
Anyway, the best part is that we were 13 and desperately wanted to look "older" - you know, old enough to get into an R movie. So we wore identical outfits. Yeah- We thought that probably 17 or 18 year olds who went to catch a matinee would dress exactly alike. Dorks! We wore black stirrup pants (*cry*) with those pointy black flats. Kinda like this:
And with that lovely pairing, we wore white tank tops and a red v-neck Shaker sweater. Remember Shaker sweaters? Remember the trend of wearing them backwards? (or was that just at my school?) And then we belted the sweater with a big chunky belt, for extra style and sophistication. If I remember right, I had a black belt, but Elyssia's was white. We also put on LOTS of make-up, including some turquoise blue eyeshadow that we had picked up at walgreens earlier that afternoon. And of course, lots of big 80's hair held securely in place with lots of hairspray and gel. Ooh, I just remembered, I also wore big red plastic hoop earrings.
So we hopped on the city bus and then waltzed into the mall in this get up. Everyone was either looking at us or commenting to us, since we were dressed like twins (though we looked nothing alike) We went right up to the ticket booth and calmly said, "Down and Out in Beverly Hills, please." The guy totally bought it - or really, more likely, didn't care. He did try to hit on my friend though. He was asking her what she was doing after the movie and trying to get her phone number. (Did I mention that at age 13 she was probably already a solid D cup?) Yeah- There really was no "sneaking" involved.
The End. Thank you, my name is Jen.

Um, Shaker sweaters?
This reminds me of my "bad-girl" friend, who also went the way of the trollop. We also drifted in 8th grade, but she wasn't due with her first until Senior Prom.
Oh, and also a D-cup at 13. Odd parallel.
Oh, I could just SEE those outfits! Totally cool for the time. And yes, I too know about Shaker sweaters worn backwards - it was in my area, too.
Hee hee - thanks for the trip down fashion memory lane!
Hee! Oh my god, how fabulous! I can totally see you. And yes, I too recall shaker sweaters worn backwards even though I spent most of my time in a school uniform during that trend. Ah, 80s fashion. The best part is, do you remember how sartorially superior we felt to those poor fashion victims of the 70s? Glass houses.
