So.
I signed up to do a 5k.
And when I say "do", I mean run.
Seriously.
The whole 3.1 miles.
(I know that's not a lot to you marathoners out there, but to a woman who hasn't run a mile since high school, trust me, it's a lot!)
I finished the Couch to 5k program about a week ago, and I can now run for 30 minutes at a time. Since I finished, I had to have something to keep me going so that I didn't waste all that hard work, so I found a race and signed up. The race is Sept. 23 - I've got just about a month to get my speed up a little bit, because right now, I run super (say: sup-AH) slow, but at least I know I can make the distance.
Oh, and I also have to learn how to run outside. Apparently, they don't let you bring your treadmill to the race course.
This is all Kashka's fault.

Hopefully I won't need the police escort...

Wow. I am impressed. Do you need a cheering section?
Woot woot! Yay for you! I'm impressed. And signing yourself up for the race so as not to waste all your hard work - brilliant!
(Did you like the Couch to 5K program?)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so impressed! And not even a peep about it until you succeeded! Man, I would have been bitching about it every single day. Good for you!
Wow. Good for you. Me + running = very bad combo. HATE it and my body hates me doing it. Long walks are okay. Running - no good.
Just don't turn into one of those crazy marathon people like my brother-in-law. He's totally wack and runs in Death Valley, multiple times, without stopping, for days on end. This is one of his easier races. He's crazy.
No there will be no running for days on end- or in the desert! Eep!
MrsH- I did like Couch to 5k- it's really good and it's also available as a free podcast over on itunes. LOVE the podcast- it really helped with weeks 1-7. Though Robert ( the guy who made it) sounds a lot like Sullenfish to me - which is a little ...odd. :)
this post makes me want to paraphrase from forrest gump -
"run, allknowingjen, run"
i am so impressed.
it looks like jens across the nation are running as our friend jen from utah is also running.
this jen does not run. but i will cheer you on.
All Knowing? That definitely applies. But you might want to change it to Amazing. Astounding. Astonishing. Athletic. Go Jen!! I'm so thrilled for you :-)
WaaHooo! I am more than happy to take the blame for this one. I'm so proud of you! Like, "got a little tear in the corner of my eye just now" proud.
Of course, now you'll be forced to spend a few minutes of Mai Tai suffering through Kashka's 5K Race tips, including the dreaded "negative splits" lecture.
And my main tip about running outside, since you'll probably be starting that before I see you? Take it from Ol' Scabby Knees over here: Screw scenery -- Look Down, Always.
So the line about not taking the treadmill to the race course had me laughing outloud! Congrats on finishing the program!!!! I'm starting my 28 minute runs on Sunday and I'm actually looking forward to it,,, never thought I would say that! I'm hoping to run my 5k in under 35 minutes, but I'll be honest, I'll be happy if I can finish it without walking. Luckily, my race isn't until Oct. 20th, but I'll be thinking about you on Sep. 23 and will be watching for a post about your success!
