If possible, go directly to the farm and pick a pumpkin from the vine. That's the only way to know if your pumpkin is really fresh.
Look for a well-balanced pumpkin with a steady base.
Make sure the stem isn't broken. Look for a sturdy stem and never, ever lift the pumpkin by the stem. Sturdy or not, it’s a short trip from “nice pumpkin” to splat.
Choose a solid, not soft or mushy pumpkin. It should be the right color orange and not have any soft spots or bruises.
Thump the pumpkin and listen for a solid “thunk”. A hollow sound is bad news.
If you plan on carving your pumpkin, make sure it's not too small. You will need ample room for carving out the face.

Cute! My favs are the ones where it looks like she's trying to pick up the pumpkins that are at least as big as she is!
You know - If you're going to go through all this trouble: http://www.extremepumpkins.com/dunanddrag.html You'd think you'd at least want to get the number of eye-stalks right. /geek off.
Hee! I agree with Ms. Huis Herself. Nicely illustrated, AKJ!
