Asian Beetles 1700

sigh

I don't remember there being so many damn lady bugs when I was a kid. They used to be kind of hard to find. My friend Joy and I used to try to catch them and build them little homes in her mother's empty "International Coffees" cans. We'd poke holes in the plastic top and it was the perfect size for a little lady bug condo. We used grass and leaves to line the bottom and sometimes threw in a rock or an acorn for aesthetics. Plus, they smelled like vanilla lattes, which was nice. Turns out, I was right, and my memory isn't faulty. There didn't used to be so many, the infestation is fairly recent.

"Although multicolored Asian lady beetles were never released in Minnesota, they moved into the state from nearby areas. They were first sighted in Minnesota in 1995. The first report of major infestations around buildings occurred in 1998, and by 2000 the insect had generally dispersed throughout the state."
Which doesn't make them any less annoying.

Lady bugs signify good luck so annoying as they may be, consider investing in some lotto tickets!

It's too bad the exact opposite is happening with our honey bees... they seem to be disappearing drastically.

are they in the house?

we get them in the house, along with all the other creatures of the woods.

i found one on my toothbrush.

not the brush part.

the handle.

you'll be relieved to know that my killing of all things small and defenseless, does not extend to ladybugs.

The asian lady bugs look different from the ladybugs of my youth. They are more orangey and not that nice red, red color.

oh yes, in the house! They are looking for someplace to "winter"- apparently my family room is like Florida to these things... I don't kill them either, I can't stand that "crunch" sound. Occasionally, I try to shoo them outside again, but mostly I watch them crash into the lamp over and over and wait for them to die from exhaustion.

You, clearly, did not grow up in my parents house. My mom has to vaccuum them up there are so many. But, it does seem to be getting worse. At least they aren't boxelder bugs. I hate the swarms of those - too close to "regular beetle" looks for my taste.
