I've been searching for something to say about proposition 8 passing in California, but I haven't been able to find the right words. To say I am disappointed is not enough. To say I am surprised is also an understatement. There were similar things on the ballots in Arkansas and Florida - but I pretty much knew how those ones would turn out (I mean, c'mon, Arkansas has never really been an open minded civil rights supporting kind of place, ya know?) California, I thought was a done deal. I thought it was a last ditch attempt by religious zealots to defeat something that had already been enacted. I didn't think they had a chance in hell in Cali.
But they did. (I guess lots of ad $$ and a poorly worded ballot will get you a lot of things)
The thing is, it's not just about California. It's about civil rights, equality, and legalized discrimination. Now that proposition 8 was added to ballot and passed in CA- you can bet that the Mormons and other groups that spew the same hatred are going to try it in other states too. (Connecticut anyone?) Our constitutions and laws shouldn't be about oppression.
Want to show your support? Protests are being held nationwide this Saturday, Nov. 15th. Go to JointheImpact.com- there is link on the top of the page where you can look up locations and times for your city. I hope you will think about attending. I hope more people speak up. I hope more people will pay attention. I hope it will make a difference.

Maybe we'll see you there!
Again... since I live in Utah (but I'm not mormon... just sayin') you can imagine how much crap we've heard about this one. All the news channels, especially the mormon owned one, are talking about how mormon churches are being picketed and how many members of that church are asking to be taken off the books, etc. I'm absolutely stunned when you hear the amount of money that was put forward by the mormon church to fight something that should be a legal right for any citizen of this country... and the kicker is that the money didn't so much come from the church because they didn't want to put money in from their coffers so they told members in their church services to donate to the cause. Or so I've been told. Disgusting. I just don't see why someone loving another human being is bad. Heaven knows, we need a lot more love in this world!
