I should have brought this up at Landscapepalooza, but I didn't know then what I know now, which is that we finally took out the misshapen, "some kind of pine" tree that was in our front yard.
Now I have a big spot of dirt.
We are thinking about trying to grow grass, but it's down in the front corner of the yard and I was also thinking that it would be kind of a nice spot for a little garden bed. But I need something easy. Or rather, hard to kill. I guess that would be called "hardy"?
Anyway, it's the north side, and there is a large Maple in the yard right there too... so while it does get some sun, it's mostly later in the day.
What would you do?

Well, if you want really easy and hardy (but a bit dull IMHO) there's always hastas. I'm assuming you don't have deer in your neighborhood to eat them.
I agree, especially since if you had it taken out this year, you want to give it time before you plant grass, since it will likely sink some as anything left of the root structure breaks down.
There are some really fun hasta's, and I usually find good deals on them at the farmer's market in Minneapolis.
I vote garden (surprise surprise). I have a big honkin' list of shade plants that I fell in love with before we cut down the maple and suddenly had a full sun yard. I'd love to talk your ear off about options. :-)
Actually, I just had a brilliant idea of what to do with the whole "lower" thing while out for a run. Put in a rain garden. Our neighborhood association gave out grants to build them this year, so I wonder if your county or city might not have a similar program to offset some of the plant cost.
Lettuce actually does well in the shade. It can be pretty and useful too! Especially red lettuce.
