Post Christmas Post

I keep trying to come up with something coherent to say, but it's difficult. Mostly because after spending the long weekend with various family members, I want to post about them, but I have a cardinal rule about not posting anything here that I wouldn't say to their faces. SO. How about a random list, hmmm?

  • Our house looks like a toy store blew up inside of it. This is what happens when you have the first grandchild and her birthday is also a week before christmas.
  • We had my great-grandmother's recipe for chicken and noodles on christmas day- which isn't really much of a recipe at all. It's literally chicken and noodles boiled in a pot. She used to make it during the depression for her 9 children and she would serve it over mashed potatoes to make it stretch further. I am sure the idea that we have it for a celebratory holiday dinner would have her rolling over in her grave.
  • My MIL's new kitchen is beautiful and I have a little bit of counter top envy. Okay, a LOT of counter top envy. However, they re-did the entire kitchen and didn't put in a dishwasher! She is always complaining about not having a dishwasher. But she says she has no room for it. I would have made room. I guess at least now she can look out the window while she washes dishes. It really did turn out nicely. And they didn't have to cancel christmas-yay!
  • Gifts I got duplicates of: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and a 9x13 baking pan.
  • Gifts Attila got duplicates of: a t-shirt that reads: "I'm in charge here, the parents are just for show"
  • Gifts Dude got duplicates of: Season 4 and Season 5 of Babylon 5.
  • My mom was in charge of crackers and cheese and some cookies for christmas dinner. We just had her and my dad and my sister over. My mom kept setting the table as though MANY people were coming. "Well, we'll put all of these here and people can just take what they need." Um, What people mom? This is all of us! She seriously brought about 6 different varieties of crackers.
  • If your child gets holiday books (like a Rudolph book) does that go into regular book rotation, or does that get packed away with the christmas decorations?
  • I went out briefly this evening to check out the after christmas clearance on wrapping paper and decorations and kohls was totally picked over, they had about 3 rolls of wrapping paper left, one sad stocking, and a wreath that looked like it had been trampled. Also, Valentine's cards/crap were already being displayed. Ugh.

I hope to never be without a dishwasher again. I would've made room too.

Mama B. used to put the holiday books away with holiday stuff until I was old enough to read them myself, at which point they stayed out all the time. I would say at this point it depends on your tolerance for Christmas-themed stuff in, say, June.

I'd say leave the books out. Unless kids are eating the books or using them in an "inappropriate way" (whatever that means), the more books the better.

My step-brother and his wife have a tradition, that we have picked up, where they get one new holiday book a year and write the year and some notes about the family in the front cover. We keep them (both of them) in a special place on the "family" bookshelf.

Target was also picked over, although I was able to snag Christmas cards for next year. And I got duplicates of the new Meat Loaf album, but that's it.

And yes, before I cleaned yesterday, our house looked like the Toy Monster puked all over our livingroom floor. And my mom hasn't even weighed in yet.
