I got new license plates for my car- what am I supposed to do with the old ones? It seems wrong to throw them out- do they recycle them or something? How do you stop them from being re-used? Does anyone know?
My Dad just always hung the old ones up in the garage... (though really, as soon as the car was paid for was about when he started looking for a new one, so we rarely kept a car long enough for new plates, so I have no idea.)

They go on the garage wall. And you're right -- if you're going to dispose of them, make sure it's in a way that'll keep them from ending up on other vehicles.
When you get the new plates (or when you just e-mail the DMV to tell them you're not using your MN plates anymore), they make note in the system that the MN plates (called "tags" here) are no longer valid. So, while they could end up on a car, if a trooper actually looked them up, they would know they aren't valid and also no one can buy new stickers for them.
I'm with your dad and Kashka...garage wall. You definitely don't want to get rid of them, because they'll someday take their proper place on Atilla's bedroom wall. That is, if there's any of her father in her, which, let's face it.... ;)
We still have 6 or 7 Texas plates in the garage from the previous owner...
You could ship them off to the Navy Club on Yongsan base in Seoul. I never saw a MN plate there. Lots of other states, but not MN....
I gave my MN and GA plates to a former intern of mine in IN. He had a collection of plates from all 50 states...they were hung on the wall of his apartent. Strangly his fiancee didn't seem to mind. There seems to be a theme....
You now have me wondering what my husband did with our Texas plates. Wow, I have no clue as to what to do with them. Open a restaurant and hang them on the walls as decor maybe?
