Break out the china

So. Like the rest of the free world, I am in "must organize, must get rid of some of this junk" mode. Maybe it's advertising that makes me feel this way, but the post-holiday purge is on at my house. One of my plans is to clear out the basement so that we can turn it into a playroom for Attila. Someday, she'll be able to play mostly unsupervised and a playroom to store some of her toys would be handy. We are at least going to replace the carpet, but in an ideal world, I'd do drywall too. (it's cheaply paneled right now). We'll see how far this goes.
Regardless, the first step is to clear out some of what is being stored in there now.

The husband and I have been married for 6 years (as of this past Nov.) and when we registered for wedding gifts, we decided to be practical and register for "casual" china instead of fancy porcelain or something. We are not fancy people, and besides, I've seen my mom use her wedding china less than 10 times. So we did. And then we bought a house. And then when we moved into the house we said, "Lets put the china here in these boxes until we have a buffet or a hutch or something to put it in, since there is not really a good place for it in the kitchen." Using our "everyday" dishes in the meantime. Uh-huh. We've been talking about getting a piece of furniture for it for awhile, but it's so dumb, because we purposely registered for dishes that were functional and dishwasher/microwave/oven/freezer safe. And they've been packed up lo these many years. Stupid.
I used to think that we would at least get it out for company, but we had company over the holidays and we did not bring it out. Not last year, not this year, not ever. Ridiculous.

No more!
I got out the china and I am taking the old stuff to the charity shop. I also found the silverware.
And a bowl for the stand mixer (that I completely forgot I even had)
And some pilsner glasses that I also forgot we even had (not that we really drink pilsner, any takers?)
I think we will still have to get some kind of buffet type thing since I still have glassware and some serving pieces that I would really like a better place for, but I've gotten rid of 3 huge boxes at least.

Oh this was funny-one of the boxes read: "Box #62, Kitchen. Pots, drawer, cords, batteries, timer (light)." It was a box from when Mr & Mrs H went to Europe the first time, and we inherited some boxes when they moved back and unpacked. (Just further proof of how long they've been boxed up.) I love that "drawer" was crossed out. "Drawer" just didn't make the cut.

Being that we had a smaller group for gifts, we didn't get a full set of our "china". Last year we finally hit a sale at Marshall Fields and bought the rest of it and got rid of the other stuff. Best thing we ever did, congrats.

Oooo.. a second bowl for the mixer... I want one now.

Ah, Box #62, I remember it fondly...

Actually it leaves me wondering what the heck was "timer (light)?" Was it a timer for lights? A kitchen timer that was light in color? One that wasn't as heavy as another one? *shrug* Who knows anymore?!

And no, apparently it was a bad drawer. No box for you! :)

We did get the full china. Know how many times we've used it? Most of it still has a tag on the bottom, that's how many.

But Syl, am I remembering right that you have a nice cabinet to keep it in at least?

As a veteran of a much-used basement playroom, my vote is to leave the paneling in until Attila's essentially grown and you're ready to turn the space into non-playroom.

We did not get fancy China either. My mom uses hers for company but she has 3 sets of china from her wedding, grandma, and a great aunt. So I figured I would get at least one of those sets someday... I LOVE our regular dishware!

I was going to say I have some drywall skills (also tiling in regard to previous post) so I could help if you decide to do that (though sometimes pulling paneling will reveal drywall) but Kashka has a pretty good point about playrooms (I just needed to do this one more time to prove I'm crazy:).

We do have a cabinet, which is just another place to store more crap.

And shonuff, how are you at pulling down walls?

Do you not remember the walls that were originally in my old house? They didn't fall over themselves...

Hows the old Fooq Futon doing?

So that's where that box went! I've been looking for that box for 5 years now. See, I've got this drawer and I thought there was a box for it. Could I stop by and pick it up some time?
