Why 18? Because I didn't want to get too serious with this and keep it fairly short and funny. 18 seemed like a good cut off.
- Andy- 2nd grade. He had those seriously melty brown eyes. All the girls loved him, however, very few were strong enough to hold him down and kiss him during a playground re-enactment of Star Wars. Sometimes being an amazon girl came in handy. Our relationship was over before it started.
- Brian - 6th grade. I stole him away from my best friend Jessica. Though, to be fair she only went after him in the first place because she knew I liked him. Anyway, I won him over and he gave me a pin with a heart and rainbow on it. I wore it on my purple puffer jacket. Brian ended up on the student council in high school and I have a strong hunch he went on to be gay later in life (but I have no solid confirmation-except that rainbow pin he gave me.)
- Brandon- 7th/8th grade *sigh* So cute and so sweet. My first Jr. High boyfriend. He came to a party that my friend E threw, and he wanted to get with this Colleen girl, but she was not into him at all (though they did become an item a few years later) so we hit it off instead. Extremely smart and talented, he played multiple instruments. Our first kiss was at the end of Top Gun, in the back row of the movie theater. I was crushed when in 8th grade he told me he wasn't in love with me anymore. We even had our own song!
- Whitney- 8th grade. Yes, a boy named Whitney. My dad loved that one. Whenever poor Whitney called my house, my dad would always always say "What's a Whitney?" Dads are so embarrassing. Last I heard he went on to a career building and repairing violins. I don't think Whit and I were really "in love" so much as we just hung around in the same crowd and it was convenient to date when there were 4 of us girls and 6 or 7 boys. I dated him right after he broke up with Shelley. I can't believe I remember all of this. I can't believe I am telling the internet...
- Alex- 8th grade. total sweetheart, same Jr High crowd. I dated him right after he broke up with Mary. It was my turn. But I had to fight for it. I remember that we saw Ferris Buehler's Day Off many times. I don't remember a big break up, I think it was more like we just slowly drifted apart. We had a song too.
- Josh- 9th grade. OK now I think we are moving into high school, and as odd as it sounds, it gets a little blurry here. You'd think I would remember better, but I don't. Early high school I had a wicked crush on this Josh kid. Not in my social group at all. There were some mild flirtations, but nothing ever panned out. I can't remember his last name.
- Erik- 9th grade. Knew him from Jr high. Extremely smart, artistic and creative. He wrote me notes every day. At the time he was more into me than I was into him. My sister saw him at karaoke night a year or so ago.
- K- 9th/10th grade. (I don't want to list his name because it's unique) K was a sophomore and I was a freshman, and we had a poetry class together. Yes, really. He sat directly across the circle from me underneath the windows and I had a mad crush on him. He was a fencer. Very good at both foil and epee. He started the whole idea of a fencing club at school and I was sucked in, all because I was making my moves on him. (apparently my 'moves' at the time included a) follow him around like a puppy and b) use shooting photos for the yearbook as an excuse.) We hung out a bit and were sort of in a mutual place, but he was dating someone else when I was not, and then when he finally broke up with her, I had moved on and was dating #9. (we stayed friends though, what with the fencing). He wrote me some lovely poems.
- Tom- 10th grade. He was from a different school, and a year older, but came to my school for Spanish class, which is where we met. He was either going to end up dating my friend Lois (who was also the school mascot) or me. There was constant witty banter going on in that back row and it was never in spanish. He played bass in a band that was always changing their name. We dated for a long time -it was nice that he didn't already know a lot of my friends, but in the end I got tired of going to band practice and getting stoned.
- Erik- 11th/12th grade. The same one as before. Erik had the nerve to date other people while I was dating other people. Can you believe that? I got jealous and asked him out again. A lot had changed from when we first dated, so it was completely different. But in a good way. My parents weren't crazy about him, but they didn't put up too much fuss since he drove like a little old lady. His mom hated me at first, but I won her over. She was always convinced we were having sex even though we weren't. She was very twitchy about leaving us alone. She's also the one who made me go along on the campus tour at the college I attended though, so I owe her that.
- T- summer before 12th grade and kind of into my freshman year at college. We met when I worked as a camp counselor. We had a lot of laughs together and I credit him for showing me how to be spontaneous and adventurous. But our friendship was complicated. complex. weird. I never knew where I stood. And then he was gay. Oh. No wonder he was so conflicted. We tried to stay friends for quite a while, but something was gone and it was never the same.
