I helped stop a crime today. Yep. I apprehended the suspects while they were on the run. The police came and justice was served. All in a days work.
Hee. :) What really happened; Attila and I were out at the fabric store to get some supplies for costume building. We left there and walked down to the office store because I also needed some folders. The two stores are in the same strip-mall kind of place with a sidewalk out front. As we were walking back to the car, two teenage girls were walking up behind us, and they all of a sudden began running towards us. I moved over to let them by, and just as they passed, something fell out of one of the girls' pocket. So I said, "Hey, you dropped something" - I thought it was a lipstick because I thought they had come out of the beauty supply store. But when we got closer, I saw it was a cigar/cigarillo kind of thing.
When the 2nd girl heard me say she dropped something, she came back to pick it up and I instantly turned into middle-aged-woman/ Everymom and said, "Is that yours? You know, you really shouldn't be smoking. You are so young and so pretty! Not to mention, it's really hard to quit." ( I swear, I didn't even think about saying it, it just came spewing out of my mouth)
She didn't say anything to me, just listened and smiled. But THEN there was a shout behind us (from the way she had come) and here come 2 guys running up the sidewalk yelling 'HEY!' and the girl took off running again. Both girls then headed off across the parking lot where the 2 guys cut them off and caught them. She wasn't a nice young smoker at all! She was a shoplifter!
The guys detained them in the McDs parking lot until the police got there. I should have given her my "Don't steal" speech instead of the "Don't smoke" one. Who knew?
It probably wasn't because of me that they got caught- the two guys caught the faster girl who had never stopped running anyway. It was sad though, they both looked way too young. (not that there is an acceptable age) Though maybe getting caught by the cops while they were young will stop them from doing it in the future. I've heard that works sometimes. I should have thrown in my "Why aren't you at school?" lecture for free.
