So the geniuses called me back. It wasn't a $25 repair. :( They thought that a $300 repair, plus a few weeks of R&R in California might have fixed it, but I just couldn't justify the expense. (or more time away from my work files) I am very very lucky that my very handsome husband had not yet sold or completely hacked apart his old laptop, since that one is now mine. So I really have nothing at all to bitch about. Things could have been a lot worse. I just don't like change, especially when it's my own damn fault.

Damned Mac Geniuses found a simple workaround for the hardware problem on my iBook, so I wasn't able to justify getting myself that shiny new iMac I've had my eye on.
Bastards.
