We're having some leaking issues with our chimney so I called a roofer/chimney guy to come out and look at it. Dave spent about 3 min. on our roof and said,
"Well, the problem is they used roll roofing up on top there and it's just about worn through. But I don't know what I can do to fix it..."
At this point I am thinking a) THAT's not good. b) What the heck is roll roofing?
Dave tells me that roll roofing is a material you usually put on under a flat asphalt roof. And then he tells me that probably the best fix is to get a sheet metal piece for the chimney. Something to cover it up and drain water away.
He then says, " I could get the piece for you, but you might as well call the sheet metal company yourself, they'll come out and measure and install it. There is no sense in you paying them AND me."
Don't you love that? I love honest contractors! yay!

Keep Dave on your speed dial!
An honest contractor?! Miracles do happen. I once told my husband that he and his father should go into business because they are the handiest men I know and pretty much built his parents home themselves. My husband told me it wouldn't be a good idea because they would never make any money. They're too honest for that industry. Point taken.
Hat's off to Dave for not taking the job if he's not sure that he can fix it. I thinks sometimes that these "honest" contractors are honest because they think the job is going to be more hassle than it's worth, or they just don't have the experience to know what they are getting into (e.g. they don't know how to accurately bid the job). In any case, what you really need is metal flashing around the chimney. The trick is to get it formed correctly around the chimney and then integrate the shingles on top of that. The cheap, dirty and short term solution is to go up there with a bucket of tar and slosh it around. Might get you a few years. How long until you need new shingles?
